Quick reference for editors on University-branded WordPress websites 

University Standards

Brand and Communications 

All content must follow the University’s brand and communications requirements. 

See the Marketing and Communications Policies  policies for brand usage, tone, imagery and public‑facing presentation. 

Brand colour guidance is documented in the University brand guidelines and reflected in internal tooling such as the usydColours palette.

Accessibility

The University requires all web content to comply with WCAG 2.2 Level AA.

As an editor, this means: 

  • Add alt text to every image 
  • Use proper heading levels to structure the content
  • Keep link text descriptive 
  • Maintain strong colour contrast 

Core Editing Practices in University WordPress 

Using Blocks and Patterns 

Use the WordPress editor’s default blocks and any University‑provided blocks and patterns. These maintain brand consistency and accessibility. 

Writing Style 

Content must be clear, public‑facing and follow University communication expectations. Refer to brand and communication policies above.  

Use: 

  • Plain English 
  • Short paragraphs 
  • Consistent formatting 
  • Meaningful headings 

Images and Media 

  • Optimise images before uploading 
  • Add alt text that describes purpose 
  • Avoid text baked into images 
  • Use University brand colours when necessary  

What Editors Don’t Need to Do 

Content editors are not responsible for: 

  • Installing plugins 
  • Updating WordPress core or plugins 
  • Adjusting theme code or templates 
  • Managing analytics configuration (GA4 is centrally managed)
